WarFlail's Armoury is primarily for the fans of Hârn. Here you will find Bill Gant's HârnMaster House Rules, which tries to make an excellent RPG system even better! Also at this site is HÂRN LINK, the most comprehensive database of Hârn-related sites on the web.

HMA Character Profile - Linear Armour layering

I know a lot of people like to use the HMA system but prefer to use the original linear armour layering rules from HM3 / HMg. So, I have updated the Character Profile accordingly.

Linear... what? Here's a short refresher on the subject of layering rules for armour in HM:

I think that wearing multiple layers of armour should not result in a simple linear increase in protective values in HārnMaster. If doubling a weapon’s size (e.g. Broadsword to Greatsword, or Club to Maul) does not double its base Impact, then doubling the thickness of a material (by overlapping) should not double its protective value either.

Particularly for Cloth, Quilt, Leather,Scale and Plate, APVs are generally proportionate to the square root of the material’s base weight. Therefore, instead of making the protective values of layered armour cumulative, HMA handles overlapping armour by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the APVs of the layers (rounding up). Note that I don't take credit for this idea – this was first published on the web by Klaus Mogensen.

HMA Armour Profiles - Men at Arms

There are times when you as a HârnMaster GM might find the need to quickly generate a lot of opponents for a skirmish with the PCs. While it is easy enough to use a resource such as BattleLust, the characters are too generic: there is no distinction between one combatant and the next for a particular unit type. Likewise, there are some excellent fan-created resources on the web for NPCs, but they tend to be unique and not so helpful in a mass battle situation.

So, enter the Men at Arms profiles for HârnMaster Advanced.  Here are 16 NPCs of varying abilities that could all be part of the same unit or randomly drawn from to pit before the PCs.  Each warrior has been generated using a few rules to 'normalise' them to a degree, so that the NPCs can be re-used in other situations.  Each NPC has stats and traits that help to give the GM an idea of the kind of personality and motivations that character might have, if required - this may be handy, for instance, if the NPCs have been captured and are being held prisoner.

The profile (in print-friendly PDF format and also as an Excel spreadsheet) is available from the House Rules page.

General Updates

After four wonderful years living in London, England, it was time to leave and I have started a new chapter in my life in Singapore, the Island of Eternal Summer.  I will dearly miss the Hârniac pub gatherings and the infrequent HMA campaign I was running with Timo and Nick.  As far as I can tell, there are no Hârn players in Singapore, which is very sad (but not difficult to believe).

Anyway, in the meantime I know that if anyone had been trying to download the most recent files from the House Rules page, they would have met with errors, no doubt leading to some degree of panic that the HârnMaster Advanced rules had vanished into the void of the Internet.  This problem was due to the files being hosted at a different domain, which died due to rising costs.  Anyway, I arranged for increased webspace on warflail.com so now everything is hosted in the one domain.  The upshot: all file links have been restored.
